How do our children study? Do we as parents help or hinder?

Often parents assist their children in their studies by giving well-meaning advice which sadly can prove to be more harmful than helpful.

The way in which many parents studied and the way in which our children should be studying vary greatly.

There are many factors which influence the way in which children study effectively. Understanding your child’s key learning style would be the first step in identifying effective learning strategies. Adopting effective and varied study skills assists children and teenagers in assimilating information more effectively, ensuring deeper understanding and an ability to apply the relevant skills. Rote learning and asking children to answer obvious questions does not ensure optimal retention of information.

There are key skills which can be taught to children as young as 7 which would optimise their learning potential. Parents who familiarise themselves with these strategies and techniques would be more effective in assisting their children.
